The UX Challenge: Unifying Coursera’s Digital Experience
As a consultant at Coursera, my challenge was to design and influence the new brand identity while ensuring UX consistency across multiple product verticals. With rapid team growth over recent years, the UX/UI had become fragmented and inconsistent, leading to substantial technical debt and a disjointed user experience. My role was to establish new design processes and lead visual design efforts to bring cohesion across Coursera’s expanding ecosystem.
The UX Solution
To create a scalable and unified design experience, we:
- Collaborated with Brand & Product Designers – Developed a cohesive design language that worked seamlessly across marketing and product experiences.
- Built a Strong Design Foundation – Established core design principles and frameworks to unify and elevate Coursera’s visual identity.
- Created the Coursera Design System (CDS) – Developed a scalable, reusable design system to streamline workflows, improve consistency, and reduce technical debt.
- Provided Design Leadership & Creative Direction – Guided the Coursera design team, fostering best practices, collaboration, and a high standard of execution.
Outcome & Impact
- Coursera’s Digital Brand Development – A refined, cohesive visual identity that strengthens brand recognition.
- Design Leadership & Mentorship – Elevated design standards and empowered the team to maintain consistency at scale.
- Creation of the Coursera Design System (CDS) – A centralized design system that enhances efficiency, maintains UI/UX consistency, and future-proofs Coursera’s design evolution.
By aligning branding and UX/UI design across Coursera, we not only streamlined the user experience but also established a scalable system that supports the company’s long-term growth.
