Organisational Challenges: Operation Flashpoint: Red River
As my first game in the industry, Operation Flashpoint: Red River was a significant learning experience and an opportunity to contribute to a large-scale tactical shooter. The challenges we faced included:
- Bringing Modern UX/UI to a Tactical Shooter: The game was designed as a more accessible yet still highly tactical military shooter. The UI needed to balance realism with usability, ensuring that players could access critical information quickly in high-pressure combat scenarios.
- Creating an Intuitive Squad Command System: Since the game focused heavily on squad-based mechanics, the command interface needed to be fast, clear, and easy to navigate under stress.
- Military-Themed Visual Language: The UI had to reflect the authentic military aesthetic while remaining readable and functional across different environments and lighting conditions.
- Designing for Console and PC: The UX had to work seamlessly across multiple platforms, ensuring that both controller and keyboard/mouse inputs felt natural and responsive.
Solution: A Tactical, Accessible UX
To address these challenges, my team and I focused on:
- A Clean, Functional UI: We developed a HUD and menus that prioritized clarity, using military-inspired design elements without overwhelming the player with excessive detail.
- Fast & Effective Squad Commands: The squad command system was designed for quick decision-making, allowing players to issue orders efficiently without breaking immersion.
- Consistent Visual Design: I contributed to ensuring a cohesive UI style that matched the game's tactical military theme while maintaining ease of use.
- Cross-Platform Usability: We refined UI navigation for both console and PC, ensuring a seamless experience across different input methods.
Outcome
- Improved Tactical Gameplay Flow: The intuitive command system made it easier for players to issue squad orders efficiently, reinforcing teamwork without disrupting the action.
- Military Authenticity with Accessibility: The UI struck a balance between immersive realism and user-friendly design, making tactical gameplay more approachable.
- Valuable Industry Experience: As my first game in the industry, this project gave me hands-on experience working on game UI, HUDs, and player interaction, setting the foundation for my future roles in UX/UI design.
Working on Operation Flashpoint: Red River was an invaluable introduction to game development, UI/UX best practices, and how to design interfaces that enhance both immersion and usability in a tactical shooter.
